Asthma is a major contributor to school absenteeism and lost work days. Asthma exacerbations are a clear driver of missed days, but fear of an asthma attack is also a factor. Cautious parents may stay home with their children to keep them healthy. School absences significantly decrease a child's likelihood of success.
As a response, and in addition to home visits, a.i.r. nyc provides in school services and has since it was an initiative within the Harlem Children's Zone in 2001. Today, a.i.r. nyc provides services to children in more than 350 New York City schools, while also running a targeted program called A.C.T., or Asthma Control Training, at Public Prep, a nonprofit that founded Boys Prep Bronx and Girls Prep Bronx, among other schools.
