Motivating changes in behavior and developing trust to encourage self-care are core elements of AIRnyc's work. Through a home-based approach, AIRnyc Community Health Workers screen for anxiety and depression with every referred patient, as well as provide support, education, and referrals.

Depression is the leading cause of disability in New York City, where 8% of adults experience symptoms of depression each year. And depression is more common in adults living in poverty. Anxiety disorders are also common and debilitating conditions. Community Health Workers use simple screens (GAD-2 and PHQ-2) to assess all referred patients and then co-develop a self-care worksheet at follow-up visits.
