Our vision.

We envision a healthy NYC, where everyone has equal access to healthcare, housing, and food, regardless of income or neighborhood.

Our mission.

Fighting chronic diseases by breaking down barriers to care, while also giving our clients a voice in how change is achieved.

Underserved communities, impacted by structural racism, disproportionately suffer from chronic disease. This impact is worsened by housing instability, food insecurity, unemployment, and a lack of access to quality care and services. We work at the intersection of these injustices to connect with community residents and help them navigate and achieve the best health and social care outcomes.

Our story.

Founded 20 years ago as a project of Harlem Children’s Zone to respond to the growing asthma crisis in Harlem.

Our work began as a demonstration project in 2001 led by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, The Harlem Hospital Center, and Harlem Children’s Zone, designed to address pediatric asthma in Harlem. As time went on, these efforts were so impactful – and so urgently needed - that, with seed funding from Robin Hood, AIRnyc was formed as an organization in 2009, focused on improving the health and well-being of individuals and families in traditionally under-resourced communities.

Over the years, we have expanded to become city-wide to meet the growing and changing needs of New Yorkers, addressing not only asthma, but a plethora of other chronic health conditions and social needs. AIRnyc started with five Community Health Workers (some of whom are still with us) and now includes a team of over 30.
